Most Republicans are well aware that Joe Biden did not beat Donald Trump in 2020, after spending most of the campaign in his basement and after Trump drew tens of thousands of people to every event he held.
But of course, most are also too cowardly to admit it in public.
That doesn’t include members of the Texas Republican Party.
At the party’s convention this week, members not only blasted “RINOs” but they also declared, without fear of criticism, that the 2020 results were bogus and Joe Biden was not “legitimately elected.”
“Texas Republicans met at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston this week to set the party’s agenda for the 2022 election and to discuss the issues of the day, such as election integrity, immigration, gun control, and the economy,” reported alternative news site 100% Fed Up.
“The more conservative grassroots set the tone for the convention, rebuking Senator John Cornyn (R-Tx.) for his stance on gun control and taking a significant stand on the 2020 election, where convention attendees passed a resolution saying that Joe Biden was not ‘legitimately elected.'”
According to additional reporting by the Texas Tribune, the convention — the state party’s first in-person meeting since 2018 — also adopted several other resolutions while proposing a number of changes to the GOP platform, moving further to the right (while Democrats move further to the left, by the way).
Cornyn was rebuked for agreeing to sit down with majority Democrats and craft a new “gun control deal” after two mass shootings, one in Buffalo, N.Y., and another in Uvalde, Texas. The latter saw 19 children and two adults killed after responding police officers refused to engage the shooter for more than 75 minutes. The “deal” is likely to include an incentive for states to pass so-called “red flag” laws that empower courts to authorize police to remove firearms from someone’s home who has been “deemed a threat” — without a trial or so much as an appearance in court. Such laws have been successfully challenged; the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down one red flag law as a blatant violation of the right to keep and bear arms as well as due process under the law.
In addition, the Texas GOP declared that homosexuality is “an abnormal lifestyle choice” while calling for schoolchildren in the state “to learn about the humanity of the preborn child” (this reporter is pro-life but not crazy about the homosexuality declaration, for the record).
“The actions capped a convention that highlighted how adamantly opposed the party’s most active and vocal members are to compromising with Democrats or moderating on social positions, even as the state has grown more diverse and Republicans’ margins in statewide elections have shrunk slightly in recent years,” the Texas Tribune added.
“Cornyn was met with boos after he took the stage to justify his support of gun control legislation that would expand background checks for gun owners younger than 21 and provide funds to ‘red flag’ laws that currently exist in 19 states.”
Convention-goers also passed a resolution that calls for ending the Federal Reserve.
Overall, the convention was a huge success for the grassroots rank-and-file conservatives who have long accused the “mainstream” Republican Party of being far too moderate on issues like illegal immigration, federal fiscal and monetary policy, and — thanks to Cornyn and others like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Trump-hating Mitt Romney of Utah — far too moderate on guns.
It seems pretty clear that in the age of Trump, the GOP has certainly moved away from the center on a range of issues, and not a moment too soon: The Democrat Party is being overtaken by left-wing Marxists who hate America and are destroying our culture.
Let’s hope other red states follow most of Texas’ lead.
